Interview with MyBoutique, owner of the Etsy shop, Below 14th Designs Tell us a little bit about your craft; what you do, how you got into it and how long you’ve been doing it. I started beading in 2005 shortly after the birth of my first child. I picked up a small kit at Michael's and thought it would be a great way to unwind at the end of the day. It quickly became an obsession. Where can we find your products? Currently my work is available at 3 online venues: Etsy: http://myboutique.etsy.com IndieNC: http://www.indienc.com My website: http://www.below14thdesigns.com What would your advice be to anyone thinking of starting an Etsy store? Etsy has so many new artists/crafters setting up shop everyday. It is so easy to get lost in the mix. My advice to anyone considering opening a shop is to have a great plan first. It's easy to open up and expect buyers to start making sales left and right, but that rarely happens. You need a great marketing plan, you need to perfect your photos and you need to be patient. Tell us a little bit about yourself. I am an Air Force wife and mother of two sweet babies (Aiden and Isabella). During the day I work at a Reproductive Endocrinology clinic. I love my day job as much as my jewelry design business. There is something very rewarding about helping couples realize their dreams of having a baby. Do you buy handmade? What products do you like purchasing? Yes, the one handmade item I cannot live without is soap. I always have at least 5 bars waiting to be used. My all time favorite scent is fresh cut grass. Do you participate in craft shows? Why/why not? Yes, I love to participate in craft shows. In my opinion there is nothing more gratifying than to have people see, touch and comment on your work. It is a great way to talk about your work, ind out about other events, meet other crafters and even acquire some custom orders. What do you do on your spare time aside from your Etsy store? When I am not working on my Etsy store I am either caring for my children or working out. I am sort of a cardio junkie. What is the most challenging part of your work? Honestly, I think the most challenging part of my work is coming up with a weekly/monthly plan and sticking to it. There are so many places where you can promote ourselves, but it is important not too spread yourself too thin. Finding a balance is really key. |
