Tell us a little bit about your craft; what you do, how you got into it and how long you've been doing it. I crochet-I got into it around 25 years ago when I was a preteen as something fun to do along side my aunt. She was making doilies for people at her work and I would make some, too. Back then they looked hideous lol but thankfully I got better. I stopped for a while and picked back up when my daughter was born in 1999.
Where can we find your products? I sell mostly in my Etsy shop (homer424.etsy.com) and I also have a Facebook page (www.facebook.com/pages/Sweet-Baby-James-Stitches/150577027024) that I sometimes post giveaways on as well as get orders from. The majority of my orders are custom, though, and I am always open to them.
What would your advice be to anyone thinking of starting an Etsy store? Research your audience. Find out what is in demand or what is wanted with what you make. Say you make beaded earrings, find what the `in` color is or the most wanted metal findings are. Make sure your pricing is fair and not too low or too high. And don`t be discouraged by lulls in sales-the nature of the Etsy beast means there will be peaks and valleys.
Tell us a little bit about yourself. Tell us a little bit about yourself. I am a 35 year old mom who works part time as an administrative assistant for the child care center at my church and I also teach religious ed. I love to cook and to read. And shop, of course!
Where do you derive your inspiration from? usually from friends and my daughter. They will request I make this or that and if I like it, I run with it! I get a lot of ideas right before I fall asleep as well. I am always looking for things to make or replicate from real life.
What was your best or most positive experience with a customer? Just recently, I made Harry Potter, Hermoine Granger and Ron Weasley dolls for someone`s daughter and the feedback I got from her was unbelievable. She was over the moon with them and just knowing I made her happy was awesome!
Do you buy handmade? What products do you like purchasing? Yes! I love jewelry-usually earrings and bracelets and add a beads. I also love hair clips and embellished bobby pins.
Do you participate in craft shows? Why/why not? No, usually because I am too busy to work up any inventory. Also I tend to be very shy. My husband is the salesman.
How and where do you promote your Etsy items? Mostly word of mouth-I try to always remember `tell your friends!` when people buy from me.
You are in your favorite craft store. What is your guilty pleasure? Yarn, of course! I can spend forever feeling all the yarn and envisioning different projects. My husband and daughter often get exasperated because I will just stand there and stare at the yarn. LOL Little do they know I am thinking of the million and one things I can do with it!
How long does one piece of work usually take you to create? It depends entirely on the piece-dolls usually take 2 days to complete. Hats usually can be completed in one. Blankets and other more intricate items can take up to a week.
What is the most challenging part of your work? Running out of yarn at 11:30 at night and you only have 3 rows to go. LOL
